Megedeberg
The Megedeberg (also called Edeberg ) is a hill in the town of Plön in Schleswig-Holstein , where a Slavic sanctuary and later the thing site for eastern Holstein was located.
The Megedeberg is located west of the Edebergsee on the B 76 . It is an elongated, overgrown with trees and bushes, running in a north-south direction and rising like a ramp, 200 m long and about 100 m wide, which extends south over the surrounding (otherwise sloping south) Terrain rises and is accessed by paths. Geologically it is a terminal moraine .
Slavic sanctuary
The Wagrians talking after the report of the Helmold of Bosau in the Slavic Chronic at Plön a sanctuary or a place of worship , consisting of a temple with the still image of the god Podaga . This was a god of weather and wind , hunting , livestock and agriculture . The location of the temple and the idol is believed to be on the Megedeberg.
After the conquest of Wagrien in 1138/39 by the North Elbian Saxons , the Slavic cult site was destroyed under Bishop Gerold in 1156.
Thing site
The Thing site for the Gau Wagrien was on the Megedeberg , and meetings there are documented for the period from 1221 to 1466.
Modern times
From the end of the 19th century , the Megedeberg became a popular vantage point on the surrounding landscape of Holstein Switzerland with the Edebergsee and the Großer Plöner See . Today the view is severely restricted by the dense vegetation.
