Study of geomatics

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Geomatics course combines information technology with work on the recording, analysis, representation and interpretation of spatial issues.

cartography

In the cartography major , elements of graphic design are combined with data processing and information technology. Geodata are evaluated and visualized in cartographic models. The geodata are linked in two or three dimensions with database and GIS technologies, Internet and multimedia technologies and presented in print, online or on CD / DVD and on mobile devices.

measurement

The specialization in surveying combines the results of applied mathematics with methods of information technology. Traditional surveying is concerned with the exact determination of the size and shape of the earth in its entirety. New fields of activity such as satellite geodesy , facility management , quality assurance , system planning and development, real-time navigation and internet services have been added to the traditional surveying fields .

Course of studies

At universities in Germany, the geomatics course generally comprises 6 or 7 semesters in the bachelor ’s course and a further 2 to 4 semesters in the master’s course . While the cartography specialization focuses on the visualization of geodata, the surveying specialization focuses on the collection of geodata. The seven-semester bachelor's degree programs usually contain a practical semester in order to enable the students to gain more intensive practical experience.

In the cartography major, the basics of map science, visualization, computer science, data structures, data communication, surveying, representational geometry, geology and geomorphology , mathematics, human geography , spatial planning and environmental protection , map design and media design as well as digital image processing and graphic data processing are taught in the first semesters . In addition, several internships in GIS, digital image processing and photogrammetry are completed. Usually the 5th semester is a practical semester.

In the first semesters, the specialization in surveying deals primarily with analysis , linear algebra , data structures, data communication, surveying, geodetic computing, trigonometry and, to a lesser extent than cartography, with the basics of visualization and map science. Internships are completed in geodesy , satellite geodesy , cadastral surveying and mathematical geodesy. Here, too, the 5th semester is usually a practical semester. In the last semesters, topics such as engineering surveying , zoning and valuation, land consolidation, traffic route planning , land use planning and land registry and real estate management are on the schedule.

Occupational fields are spatial data management, surveying offices, planning offices, research institutions, software and consulting companies, media agencies and authorities.
