Mehmet Gürgen
Mehmet Gürgen (born December 30, 1968 ) is a former Turkish boxer.
He achieved his most significant successes in 1991; he won the international Strandja tournament in Bulgaria in March , with a final victory against local hero Atanas Atanasow and started in May at the 29th European Championships in Gothenburg , where he reached 5th place. He was eliminated in the quarterfinals against the later silver medalist from Greece , Georgios Stefanopoulos (22:29). In November he won a bronze light heavyweight medal at the 6th World Championships in Sydney . After victories against Peter Zwezerijnen, Netherlands (27:18) and Jo Da-ko, South Korea (29:25), he was only scored in the semifinals by German Torsten May (7:31).
He was the only Turkish boxer to qualify for the 25th Summer Olympics in Barcelona , where he participated as a light heavyweight at the age of 23. Due to bad luck he met World Champion Ángel Espinosa from Cuba in the preliminary round , to whom he lost prematurely in the third round.
