Meike Vogt

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Meike Vogt is a climate scientist and marine ecologist . She has been a senior scientist in the working group for environmental physics at ETH Zurich since 2010 .

biography

Vogt studied physics from 1998 to 2004 at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich , ETH Lausanne and the University of New South Wales , writing her thesis at the Max Planck Institute for Physics . She did her PhD from 2004 to 2005, initially at the Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry and then from 2005 to 2008 at the University of East Anglia , where she also worked as a postdoc for a short time . In this position she then moved to the working group for environmental physics at ETH Zurich, where she has been a senior scientist since 2010.

Act

Vogt's work deals with the dynamics and functioning of marine ecosystems . She has contributed to the review of the principles of marine ecology and the quantification of changes in the structure and functioning of marine ecosystems due to environmental and climate change .

Vogt was involved in setting up the first atlas for marine plankton and said in 2013: "Evaluating data from half a million measuring stations was an enormously ambitious undertaking and would not have been possible without international cooperation."

More recently, she modeled the occurrence of over 530 phytoplankton species with around 700,000 water samples from all oceans. Regarding the results of the study, she said: "With regard to planktonic biodiversity , our study shows that there is a positive relationship between surface water temperature and species diversity". Tropical marine life is threatened with "overheating" due to climate change.
