Milestone (Ballenstedt, mile 10)

Anhalt milestone in Ballenstedt

The 10-mile stone in Ballenstedt is a small monument in the Harz district in Saxony-Anhalt .

A relatively large number of milestones from the area around Ballenstedt were brought to the Anhalt secondary residence after they were considered superfluous due to the introduction of the kilometer. Here they were used as curbstones and some of them have only been preserved for that reason. The ten-mile stone is on Bundesstraße 185 , the successor to the most important east-west connection of Anhalt for centuries, on the corner of Alte Kreipe and Quedlinburger Straße. A Prussian mile was 7.532 kilometers long and this calculation basis was also introduced in Anhalt in the 1840s.

This stone once stood 75 kilometers from the state capital, because its inscription reads X oo miles from Dessau . In the meantime it has been proven that this stone stood northeast of Ballenstedt, because a corresponding map entry on the historical measuring table shows its existence at Radisleben. Later editions of the measurement table show as proof of the removal of the milestones on these roads milestones. This is also confirmed by a literature find. The milestone remained on site for the time being and was only found later during construction work in the ditch and brought here.

The round base stone is under monument protection and is recorded in the monument register with the number 094 50353. It is made of granite, 78 centimeters high and 42 centimeters in diameter, wider at the base. The indication oo probably indicates that the stone was set up here as the new zero point. Of course, it would also be conceivable that the meaning was expressed as a full milestone, since there were also Anhalt quarter milestones. The 11-mile stone is right next to the stone .
