Prussian half-milestone near Loitzschütz

The milestone at Loitzschütz is a listed small monument in the community of Gutenborn in the Burgenland district in Saxony-Anhalt .

Near to the south of the intersection of Bundesstraße 2 with Kreisstraße 2613 (to the east) or Kreisstraße 2218 (to the west) is a Prussian half-milestone, a so-called big bell. The stone is so far below street level that, despite its height of 120 centimeters (with base), it can hardly be seen from the street. It bears the inscription "1/2 mile" in an oval and was parked here on the edge of the field after road works.

The half-mile stone near Loitzschütz is located halfway between Gera and Zeitz on the old Prussian Chaussee from Berlin via Halle (Saale) and Weißenfels to Giebelroth , which has awarded Prussia larger parts of Saxony since the Congress of Vienna in 1815, the last place north of the Border between Prussia and Thuringia was. We are here more than 200 kilometers by road from Berlin, which shows the enormous achievement in road construction for those times (1820s).

Only a few stones have survived in this southern end piece, and they are no longer at the right distance from one another. The whole milestone at Schellbach is only 200 meters south . One Prussian mile was equivalent to 7.532 kilometers. So the stones must have been historically different to one another. This applies not only to the half-mile stone that has been brought here, but also to the all-mile obelisks. These were apparently later aligned to Weißenfels, as they are all 2.8 kilometers apart and this can be traced back to the market of the former residence town of the Duchy of Saxony-Weißenfels .

In the monument list the distance indicator is the collection number 094 66112 as a small monument entered.
