History and shape

Shortly after 1850, milestones were set up in Anhalt along the more important roads at regular intervals. Your count begins at the Dessau residential palace . Anhalt-Dessau had already introduced the Prussian mile as a measure of length in 1841 . Since these were full milestones, they were set up at precisely these intervals, which correspond to 7532 meters. In the early 1870s, the land was re-measured twice, the stones first set at a distance of 7,500 meters, then at a distance of 10 kilometers.

It cannot be proven with certainty whether this double implementation always took place locally. Since the stone with the inscription I / Meile / von Dessau is 7 kilometers away from the zero point today, it was apparently later used as a kilometer stone , which can also be proven for the stone near Roßlau . Like all Anhalt milestones, the gray sandstone was shaped as a round base, which was also the common milestone type in Prussia at the time.
