History and shape

In Anhalt were shortly after the year 1850, the more important roads at regular intervals milestones established. Like the Prussian milestones, they were designed as round base stones. Their distances corresponded to a Prussian mile (7532 meters), since this was introduced as a length measure in 1841. The Dessau residential palace was the zero point of all the milestones in Anhalt . The stone is now 10 kilometers away from Dessau's old town, so that at times - like most of Anhalt's milestones - it was probably also used as a myriameter stone . However, inscriptions are no longer legible today, so that it cannot be decided whether it was originally set up a mile or two from the castle.

According to Gollmer, it was between the 65.2 and 65.4 milestones . It is therefore very likely that it has found another use as a kilometer stone (in position 65.3 ), since this distance does not refer to Dessau and cannot be associated with the other possible zero point Zerbst / Anhalt , but rather Rather, it should be associated with the kilometrage, which corresponds to today's federal highway and former Reichsstraße.

The 80 centimeter high granite milestone was implemented twice, probably even three times, as the two new measurements of Anhalt in the 1870s led to implementation on the new mile (7500 meters) and only then on kilometers. How far this was carried out locally before the new command followed cannot always be checked.
