Meires is a place in the northern Waldviertel of Lower Austria . From a political point of view, Meires is a cadastral municipality of the market town of Windigsteig . Administratively, Meires belongs in the administrative district Waidhofen an der Thaya .

Cultural assets

In Meires there is a moated castle built around 1600 with a pond and an extensive park. The castle is in good condition and serves as a space for exhibitions or concerts.

Part of the castle and associated goods is an old dump box that has been used to store grain for hundreds of years. Today the building is used for wintering potatoes and grain.

There is a small village chapel in the center, but it is only open on special holidays. On all other days, believers must make a pilgrimage to the church in Windigsteig to pray.

Another notable cultural asset is the Neumühle on the Thaya River, about half a kilometer outside the village. The mill has not been in operation since the introduction of electricity, the weirs have long been torn down and the mill ditch filled up. The building itself is inhabited and not threatened with decay.

Meires lies on the river Thaya and has repeatedly been hit by floods. For this reason, incubation bridges were built in the 1970s, which have provided the site with good protection since then.

The area around Meires consists of a small structured field and forest landscape, which is a good home for numerous wild animals. The landscape is also shaped by the river Thaya , which passes next to the village. The bridge in Meires that crosses the river is dedicated to Saint Nepomuk .

Commercial establishments

Meires is home to a large agricultural cooperative that specializes in the breeding of new potato varieties and exports them across Europe. In general, the place is of rural character.
