history

Windigsteig was first mentioned in documents in 1281. The dates of the first documentary mention of selected cadastral communities of Windigsteig are: Matzlesschlag 1150, Meires 1232, Rafings 1292, Kottschallings 1311 and Markl 1395. The name Windigsteig as a market has been attested since 1377. From the 15th to the 18th century, the Rafingsberg district was a well-known Marian pilgrimage site. Countess Maria Leopoldina von Polheim founded a hospital with a chapel in the Markl district in 1736, which was later converted into a farm. Since the late 19th century there was an expansion of Windigsteig to the north. Between 1915 and 1918 the Markl internment camp existed in the municipality , in which mainly citizens from states at war with Austria-Hungary were interned.

According to the results of the 2001 census, there were 1117 inhabitants. In 1991 the market town had 1168 inhabitants, in 1981 it had 1267 and in 1971 it had 1431 inhabitants. Population in 2008: 1043.

  • Catholic parish church Windigsteig hl. Laurentius: The baroque church probably has a Gothic core. When the pilgrimage church in the Rafingsberg district was closed in the course of the Josephinist reforms, large parts of its baroque furnishings were transferred to the Windigsteiger parish church. Below is the miraculous image of Rafingsberg, which has been erected in Sankt Laurentius since 1784. The renovation of the west wing of the rectory is attributed to the baroque master builder Joseph Munggenast .
