The Meisenburgschen houses (house address Friedrich-Engels-Allee 185 ) are a building complex on the Wuppertal Friedrich-Engels-Allee in Unterbarmen , which are protected as residential buildings as a monument .

description

The building complex consists of three houses, which were built in half-timbered construction from the end of the 18th century to the middle of the 19th century . The rear, restored half-timbered gable front of the oldest part shows the compartment .

The two-story house on the street side with a gable roof was given a slated facade . On the rear, northern side, the building was given a two-story extension. The ground floor was converted into a shop ; in addition, the shop window front, the southern side, was changed.

history

The oldest part of the building complex was built in 1792, it is now the northwesternmost part (also the rear building). This building was built as an elementary school for the Protestant community of Unterbarmen and from 1792 housed two classes and two teachers' rooms as the “Auer Schule”. Around 1810, the building was expanded in a second construction phase, and an extension made it possible to set up two more larger classrooms. A two-storey extension was built in 1834, the second house in the building complex, the gable front of which faced the avenue. Additional classrooms were now available for elementary school students on these two floors. The courtyard to the east served as a schoolyard. In 1851 the school was relocated to today's Wittensteinstrasse and opened as the "New Auer School". Today it is part of the Christian Morgenstern School.

Meisenburg's specialty and grocery store

Friedrich Wilhelm Meisenburg (1815–1882) acquired the property of the Evangelical Community of Unterbarmen in 1861 and built the front building of the complex in the same year. The gable facade of the extension was integrated into the new building. Meisburg then opened his Spezerei- and grocery store . The business was operated in its original function until after the Second World War, despite several changes of ownership.

Restaurant as today's use

The front building is still used today as a shop, the rear buildings for residential purposes. There is a restaurant (pizzeria) in the shop that bears the name "Auer Schule".

Despite the change, the building is an integral part of the historic development on Friedrich-Engels-Allee in terms of urban planning and is therefore a testimony to the history of Barmen. It was recognized as an architectural monument and entered on January 18, 1988 in the list of monuments of the city of Wuppertal.

On December 16, 2015, an accident occurred on the building in the afternoon, the driver of a VW Touran lost control of his vehicle on a straight stretch, came into oncoming traffic and drove head-on into the wall of the building. The right shop window front of the shop was severely damaged, and guests were not injured. It was not initially possible to determine whether the building's statics had suffered, which was to be feared. The building was initially secured with a support frame construction with the help of the technical relief organization; a structural engineer was called in. The owner of the restaurant estimated the damage suffered at between 80,000 and 100,000 euros.

Remarks

  1. The building description in the list of monuments only refers to the front building from 1861, the protection status relates to the entire building complex.
