About 25 paintings were initially grouped under the emergency name Master WS with the Maltese Cross , according to a list of works from 1741. The painter of these pictures could subsequently be identified as Wilhelm Stetter .

Wilhelm Stetter entered the Order of St. John in Strasbourg in 1509 and was ordained in Basel in 1512 . His pictures are signed with WS and a Maltese cross. Many works, including probably his first from 1513, were probably commissioned for the order. In addition to his work as a priest and religious, he was not only a painter, but also custodian of the numerous art treasures of his order in Strasbourg since entering the order and remained there in the order until his death.

As a painter, Wilhelm Stetter was first committed to the late medieval Danube School until his style was then influenced by the painting of Hans Baldung Grien . Then an influence of the painting of the Renaissance becomes noticeable.
