Shuttleworth Collection
The Shuttleworth Collection is an aircraft and automobile museum at Old Warden Airfield in Bedfordshire . The collection is highly regarded worldwide for the variety of carefully restored aircraft on display. Some of the aircraft will be kept in airworthy condition and flown to various events.
history
The collection was founded in 1928 by the British aviation pioneer Richard Shuttleworth . Shuttleworth crashed his Fairey Battle on the night of August 2, 1940 and was killed in the process. His mother founded the Richard Ormonde Shuttleworth Remembrance Trust in 1944 to "study the science and practice of aviation, afforestation and agriculture".
collection
The restoration and maintenance of the exhibits is carried out by eight full-time employees who are supported by numerous volunteers. The volunteers are members of the Shuttleworth Veteran Airplane Society (SVAS), which currently has approximately three thousand members. The support of the society is crucial for the preservation of the collection and the restoration of the exhibits. The foundation tries to keep as many aircraft as possible in an airworthy condition or to restore them, which is also the intention of the founder of the collection.
Exceptional exhibits in the collection are the so-called Edwardians , aircraft that were built during the reign of the British King Edward VII or shortly afterwards. It is particularly noteworthy that these aircraft are still airworthy and are flown in regularly - depending on the weather conditions. The oldest airworthy exhibit is a Blériot XI from 1909. This aircraft still has its original engine. This aircraft is the oldest airworthy aircraft in the world, but the Bleriot XI of the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome in the USA is only three weeks younger.
The Shuttleworth Collection conducts up to twelve flight days a year, during which a part of the exhibits is flown to the front. An evening demonstration is also part of this. There are also model flying days and once a year a special flying day for pupils from schools in the region.
The collection also includes historic automobiles and motorcycles.
