The Miles M.14 Magister was a two-seat British trainer aircraft . It was built by Miles Aircraft for the Royal Air Force and Fleet Air Arm . The aircraft, also called Maggie for short, was based on the Hawk Major and the training aircraft version of the Miles M.2 Hawk and was the first monoplane that was specially built as a training aircraft. As a low-wing aircraft, it was ideal for preparing new pilots for missions with the Spitfire and the Hurricane .
development
The Magister was built based on the Air Ministry's specification T.40 / 36P . The first flight took place in March 1937, and series production began in October of the same year. At the beginning of the Second World War , over 700 copies were already in use at 16 RAF flight schools for basic training and at the Central Flying School. In addition, a large number of Hawk Major were transferred to training.
A total of 1293 magisters were produced by 1941. After the war, numerous Masters were converted for civilian purposes under the name Hawk Trainer III .
The translation of the Latin words Miles Magister is soldier-teacher .
