The Miles M.6 Hawcon was a small aircraft produced by the British manufacturer Miles Aircraft . The name is a suitcase word from the English words Hawk and Falcon.

development and construction

The M.6 Hawcon was an experimental one-off designed by the Royal Aircraft Establishment for the exploration of thick wings . They consisted of a combination of parts from the Hawk and the Falcon and were powered by a de Havilland Gipsy Six with a rated power of 200  hp (147  kW ).

commitment

The aircraft with serial number K5925 was used by the Royal Aircraft Establishment for research into thick wings. It had four sets of interchangeable wings of different thicknesses. The aim was to determine the performance degradation of thicker wings, as these offer structural advantages such as lower weight with the same stability and more space for fuel and other equipment.

The four wings, labeled A through D, had aspect ratios of 0.15, 0.20, 0.25, and 0.30. The tests showed that the thickness of the wings had little influence on the top speed. The B wing was approximately 5  mph (8  km / h ) faster than the A wing, a reduction of less than three percent. The values of the other two wings were in between. The values given below refer to the D wing.
