As a master of Vitae Imperatorum one is medieval illuminators referred. The artist, who is not known by name, got his emergency name ( Italian Maestro delle Vitae Imperatorum ) after the Vitae Imperatorum he painted , a copy of this work by the ancient writer Suetonius with descriptions of the lives of Roman emperors ( emperors ). The manuscript and its illustration in a scriptorium ( illumination ) is dated around 1431 and was probably made in the Milan area.

Training and style

The master of the Vitae Imperatorum was probably a student and probably also an employee in the workshop under the reign of Filippo Maria Visconti . His work is close to the style of Lombard book illumination as it is used in the environment of this workshop. B. can also be found in the Bible of Mary of Savoy and in Giovannino de 'Grassi and Michelino da Besozzo . As with many Lombard painters of his era, the master's style seems to pursue the aesthetic ideals of cultivated court Gothic.
