Sita Air ( Nepali सीता एयर ) is a Nepalese regional airline based in Kathmandu and based at Kathmandu Airport .

history

Sita Air was founded on February 6, 2003 with a leased Dornier Do 228 and then began flight operations. In April of the same year another Do 228 was added to the airline, and more soon followed.

Since November 2013, Sita Air has been on the list of operating bans for the airspace of the European Union together with all other airlines from Nepal due to safety concerns . Flights to Europe were not offered before.

In August 2014, the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) prohibited Sita Air from continuing passenger traffic because of serious safety deficiencies and non-compliance with international safety standards. Further flight operations are therefore only permitted for freight traffic .

fleet

As of November 2018, Sita Air's fleet consists of a Dornier Do 228-212 that can accommodate 18 passengers or transport freight.

Incidents

  • On 1 October 2004 the nose gear broke a 228 Dornier Do on the Lukla airport , and the machine was badly damaged. It came to a stop at the end of the approximately 530 m long runway. The incident resulted in the airport being closed for two days because the plane had to be recovered. There were neither seriously injured nor dead.
  • On September 28, 2012, a Dornier 228-200 operated by Sita Air (9N-AHA) crashed on the flight to Lukla after take-off about 500 meters from Kathmandu Airport. All 19 occupants died in the accident. A loss of thrust unnoticed by the pilots led to a loss of control and a crash.
  • On June 1, 2013, a Dornier 228-200 from Sita Air (9N-AHB) hit the runway at Simikot airfield . The five passengers and two crew members were uninjured in the accident.
