Master of the Rebellious Angels: Angel Fall

A painter in Italy in the second half of the 14th century, the Trecento , is referred to as the master of the rebel angels ( fr. Maître des Anges Rebelles ) . The artist, not known by name, was probably active in Siena . It got its emergency name after the picture he created around 1345 of the fall of the angel, which represents the suppression of the revolt of angels against the supremacy of God. A corresponding picture of Saint Martin was separated over time, both works are now in the Musée du Louvre in Paris. The exact composition of the original altar they formed cannot be reconstructed with certainty.

The master of the rebellious angels painted both pictures on wood, in a small format. The liveliness of the figure movements and the use and division of the surface in their depiction in the angel fall show a "courageous" departure from the static interpretation of his predecessors. The master is thus close to a painting style begun by Ambrogio Lorenzetti . He may come from the environment of Lippo Memmi or Simone Martini , both also Sienese painters of the early Renaissance . It cannot be ruled out that the master of the insurgent angels was in Avignon, France, with martini.
