Master of St. Veronica
Master of St. Veronica ( English : Master of St Veronica ) is the emergency name of a painter of the 14th and 15th centuries.
From 1395 to 1415 he was the most important Cologne painter of international Gothic and master of the soft style . It got its emergency name from the painting " Saint Veronica with the Handkerchief ", painted around 1420 and originally intended for the St. Severin Church in Cologne . It formed the central panel of a triptych .
He received training in French court art and oriented himself towards book painting. He probably got to know court art in Dijon and Paris. His style is based heavily on the Cologne tradition of the 14th century. But his knowledge of Western art around 1400 can also be proven. He knew how to combine the western influx with the original Cologne tradition of the 14th century. His works most clearly embody the international stylistic language and have also had an impact on the next generation.
More recently, other works have been attributed to the master. They are characterized by a restrained figure formation and delicate, sensitive coloring. Examples of this are “The Madonna with the Pea Blossom” (around 1400) in the Germanic National Museum in Nuremberg and “The Mother of God with the Sweet Pea Blossom” (1410–1415) from the Wallraf-Richartz-Museum & Fondation Corboud in Cologne.
Similar important paintings are known from his contemporaries, the Master of the Little Passion and the older Master of the Holy Kinship .
