Gothic winged altar (Kefermarkt Altar) from 1497

As a master of Kefermarkt altar or master of the altar of Kefermarkt one is Gothic carver and painter referred ranging from about 1470 to 1510 in Austria worked. The artist, who is not known by name, got his emergency name after the high altar he completed around 1497 in St. Wolfgang , parish church of the municipality of Kefermarkt in Upper Austria.

The winged altar of Kefermarkt shows figures of the Saints Peter, Wolfgang and Christophorus in the middle part and is adorned with filigree decorations. The reliefs of the wings depict scenes from the life of Mary . Like the church, the altar is also a donation from 1476 by Christoph von Zelking , then owner of the vineyard estate and courtier of Friedrich III. The altar is more than 13 meters high and mimics the shape of a monstrance . It is one of the largest late Gothic carvings in Europe.

The high quality of the carvings on the altar can be seen in the various suggestions that they were made by Tilman Riemenschneider , Veit Stoss , Michael Pacher or Albrecht Dürer . Since the works are generally close to the art of carving of the Upper Rhine , the influence of Niclas van Leyden is also seen, although sometimes the teacher of the master of the Kefermarkt Altar is suspected to be in him .

Attempts to identify the master of the Kefermarkt Altarpiece with the painter and sculptor Martin Kriechbaum , who can be found in Passau , remain controversial among experts.

It is possible that the master of the Kefermarkt altarpiece could also be the master of the Mauer altar near Melk .

The altar was originally not painted, despite the will of Christoph von Zelking, who wanted it painted (Lothar Schultes, Ds Land der Flügelaltär, in: Oberösterr. Nachrichten, April 5, 2008). Paintings from the Baroque period were removed in the first restoration initiated by Adalbert Stifter in 1852 to save the altar.

The master of the Kefermarkter Altar should be at the tomb of Friedrich III. have worked in Vienna. A few other works are also ascribed to him, such as a statue of Laurentius in Paris, the Seated Madonna of the Altar in Gojau , two apostles in St. Thomas am bladder stone , a female saint in the Essen Cathedral Treasury and an apostle figure in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna.
