The medieval painter who painted the winged altar in the rock church of Idar-Oberstein in Rhineland-Palatinate at the beginning of the 15th century is known as the master of the Oberstein Altarpiece . The artist , who is not known by name , created the work before the church was built between 1482 and 1484 and depicts the Passion of Christ on the inside of the three-part work . The master's style of painting is an early example of the narrative style across all images as it was in the early 15th Century also began north of the Alps.
