Master of the Wavrin

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A medieval illuminator from the second half of the 15th century is referred to as the master of Wavrin ( fr. Maître de Wavrin ') . The artist, who is not known by name, was probably active in France in the region around Lille . It got its emergency name from a few manuscripts that he created on behalf of the Burgundian nobleman Jean de Wavrin . This can be identified by the Wavrin coat of arms on the entrance pages.

The typical pictures of the master of Wavrin are much less colored than those of other contemporary illuminators and are painted in water color. The master usually contributed pictures to works together with a dozen other painters suspected in Lille, especially chivalric novels. Contributions to the following works can be attributed to the master:

The main commissioner of the Master of Wavrin , Seigneur de Forestel, Jean de Wavrin was close to the English crown and was a veteran of the Battle of Agincourt of 1415. Wavrin wrote the Chronicle Receeuil des chroniques et anciennes istoires de la Grande Bretaigne , a work that tells the story of the English royal family from the legendary beginnings around the Trojan War to the 15th century and which was illuminated in the workshop of the master of Wavrin . It cannot be proven with certainty whether the master himself also contributed miniatures.
