Like Melanotan I, Melanotan II is a synthetic substance that has similar effects to the naturally occurring melanocyte-stimulating hormone α-MSH.
Properties and effects
Melanotan II is a seven amino acids constructed cyclic peptide with the primary structure Ac-Nle- cyclo [Asp-His- D -Phe-Arg-Trp-Lys] -NH 2 .
Melanotan II is described as a tanning agent and an aphrodisiac . A 1996 clinical trial at the University of Arizona ( Tucson ) with three male subjects showed that Melanotan II causes skin tanning in humans after five low-dose subcutaneous injections every other day . Other effects observed were nausea and a need to yawn and stretch, which was accompanied by a spontaneous erection . Other studies describe similar effects.
Health hazards
Melanotan II is not an approved drug . Since illegal trade in the substance nevertheless developed, the US drug approval and surveillance authority FDA felt compelled in September 2007 to warn consumers against taking Melanotan II and to issue a warning to one of the marketing companies. The British Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) also warned in November 2008 of risks for users of the two unapproved Melanotan types.
Use as a cosmetic
The Poison Information Center North regards cosmetic use as illegal and warned against use for cosmetic purposes in 2011 due to the health risks.
Legal situation in Germany
The possession of Melanotan is not regulated by law in Germany. In the past, since the active ingredient is not approved as a medicinal product, placing it on the market was pursued according to the provisions of the Medicines Act . However, this interpretation of the Medicines Act is no longer up-to-date following a judgment by the European Court of Justice, according to which only substances that serve therapeutic purposes are covered by it.
