The Melchior-Otto-Platz 9 building , the Catholic rectory , is a listed building in the Upper Franconian town of Kronach .

Location and description

The rectory is located on the south side of Melchior-Otto-Platz, directly at the southern tip of the Kronach old town, which is located on a mountain spur ; Immediately to the north is the Catholic parish church of St. John the Baptist .

The building is a two-storey hipped mansard roof structure , which is vertically structured by corner pilasters and on the west side by a central projection. In the gable of the risalit is the official coat of arms of the Bamberg prince-bishop Johann Philipp Anton von und zu Frankenstein .

history

The rectory was built between 1752 and 1755 according to plans by Johann Jakob Michael Küchel in place of a previous building that was built in the first quarter of the 16th century. The construction work was carried out by master bricklayer Martin Mayer.

On the night of October 8th to 9th, 1806, the French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte stayed in the building. Napoleon used the city of Kronach and its Rosenberg fortress , which served as a camp for the French army, as a starting point for his campaign against Prussia , which ended on October 14 in the battle of Jena and Auerstedt .
