Melchior Berthold

Melchior Berthold (also Bertholdt, Bartholdt; * 1638; † August 10, 1698 in Brilon ) was the mayor of Brilon before 1698. In a document from 1662 he is referred to as a medicus . Bertholdt treated a defendant who had injured his neck with suicidal intent in order to evade the trial. The later convicted died of his injury, the gallows sentence was carried out on the corpse . A well-known inscription on his grave slab, which, like many others, was sold as scrap in 1843, referred to him as Elect (oralis) inspector metallorum . Berthold held the extremely important and influential office of miner of the Elector of Cologne for the Brilon trades and also held the office of electoral mine inspector.
