Melchior Britschgi

Melchior Britschgi (born June 17, 1830 in Alpnach ; † June 19, 1904 there ) was a Swiss politician and hotelier .

Life

Melchior Britschgi was born in Alpnach on June 17, 1830, the son of the farmer and church bailiff Franz Joseph Britschgi. He attended the school in Alpnach and from 1843 to 1845 the college in Sarnen . He then embarked on a military career and was promoted to lieutenant in 1853 . In 1860 he served with the rank of major in the Pontifical Swiss Regiment , where he took part in the Battle of Castelfidardo on September 18, 1860 . After returning home a year later, he bought the Rössli in 1863 and expanded it into the Hotel Pilatus . As a hotelier on the Pilatus and the Klimsenhorn as well as co-initiator of the Pilatusbahn he promoted tourism .

Melchior Britschgi, who married Karolina (nee Wallimann) in 1863, died on June 19, 1904 in Alpnach.

Political activity

In the years 1868 to 1904 he was representing Catholic Conservatives the Cantonal Council of Obwalden on. From 1896 to 1904 he was an education and government councilor . As head of the building department, he was responsible for the torrent control in Alpnach and Giswil .
