Epitaph Melchior von Frundsberg, Santa Maria dell'Anima in Rome

Melchior von Frundsberg (born February 17, 1507 , † January 13, 1528 in Rome ) was brief canon of Augsburg and captain.

Live and act

Melchior was the son of Georg von Frundsberg and his wife Katharina von Schrofenstein. In 1523 Melchior was enrolled in Wittenberg together with the later biographer of the Frundsberg family, Adam Reissner . In the years 1524 and 1525 he is mentioned as Canon of Augsburg, but evidently resigned shortly afterwards, since he appeared as captain in Tyrol on November 2nd, 1526 in the entourage of his father Georg . This fought there against the papal French league.

Together with his older brother Kaspar von Frundsberg , Melchior marched into Rome in the course of the revolt of the mercenaries because of outstanding wages and took part in the Sacco di Roma . He held on May 6, 1527 the position between the Porta San Pancrazio and the Porta Settimiana . The aim was to prevent the papal troops from leaving Trastevere . He survived the sacking of Rome itself and the months that followed, but then fell victim to the plague and died on January 13, 1528. Although he had participated in the sacking of the church of Santa Maria dell'Anima , he found his final resting place in the church with an epitaph in front of the cross altar.

epitaph

Its epitaph was probably moved from the cross altar in the wall to the left of the south side portal in 1774 or 1750 . The three-part monument was created as a light marble . The base contains an inscription with seven lines. The four coats of arms in the upper area show from left to right the arms of Rechberg , Frundsberg, Frundsberg and Schroffenstein.

"MELCHIORI A FROINDSPERG GEORGII EQVITIS SPLENDIDISS (IMI) / CAESARIANIQ (VE) GERMANICI PEDITATVS BELLO ITALICO / PRAEF (ECTI) FILIO • QVI DVM HONESTISS (IME) ORDINES DVCERET • XXV • IANVARET • / IN VRBE IDIII • IMMATVRA MORTE / INTERCEPTVS EST XXI AETATIS SVAE ANNO / GASPAR SVVEGLER ALVMNVS QVAESTOR EXERCITVS / MILITVM TRIBVNVS B (ENE) M (ERENTI) P (OSVIT) "

"For Melchior von Frundsberg, the son of George, the famous knight and leader of the imperial German infantry in the Italian war, who had led the army detachments with the greatest honor until he was in Rome on the Ides of January 1528 (January 13th) by an all too early death in his 21st year has been taken away. Kaspar Schwegler, the chief paymaster of the army, has set this (monument) to the well-deserved. "
