history

In 1236 Philip de Phendarg received the Meldrum fiefdom . His son of the same name was probably the first to use Meldrum as part of the name. By marrying William Seton , the property passed to the Seton clan in the mid-15th century . Seton fell at the Battle of Brechin in 1452 . At that time there was undoubtedly a manor house on the site. This was expanded around 1625. With the death of the last male heir of the family line, Meldrum House passed to his daughter Elizabeth , who was married to John Urquhart of Craigfintray . Until 1898, Meldrum remained in the possession of the Urquhart clan . Today's Meldrum House was partially rebuilt between 1836 and 1839. Archibald Simpson was responsible for the design as the architect . Once again by marriage, Meldrum House came into the possession of the Duffs of Hatton . It was later converted into a hotel.

description

One of the two garden houses

The mansion stands in the middle of a spacious estate on the northern edge of Oldmeldrum. The two- to three-story mansion with the towers raised by Simpson is designed in the historicizing Jacobean style . While the older masonry is made of quarry stone , the masonry from the 19th century is made of stone blocks.

The garden houses are located southeast of the manor house. The round buildings were built in the 17th century. Their facades are plastered with Harl and their conical roofs are covered with slate.

South gate

The south gate was probably built in 1851. The Harl-plastered building with dark granite combines stylistic features of the Jacobean and Tudor styles . Its central arch is worked as a Tudor arch . It rests on two octagonal pillars. Smaller gates for pedestrians are built into the continued wall. Beyond the gate is the one-story Tudor Gothic south lodge. Their masonry is made of dark granite. It was built together with the adjacent south gate.

The main gate with the stables

The main gate with the stables is opposite the manor house. The U-shaped building was erected in 1628 and redesigned in the late 18th century.
