The female first name  Melina originally comes from the Greek . It is usually associated with the Greek word Meli for honey and is said to have originated either from honey or from the bee (Greek Melissa , old Greek Melitta ), furthermore a connection to the ash (Greek Melia , cf. Fraxinus, section Melioides ), rarely also with honey wine. In the Orthodox faith a connection between the name of St. Melitini (2nd century) and honey is mentioned; Incidentally, the name Melina comes from this name and celebrates its name day together with Melitini on September 16. 
The name can also be found in Italy as a nickname for Carmela (via Carmelina).
