Melocactus broadwayi is a species of the genus Melocactus in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet broadwayi honors the American botanist and naturalist Walter Elias Broadway (1863-1935).

description

Melocactus broadwayi grows with yellowish green, spherical to short cylindrical shoots that reach the same height with diameters of 10 to 20 centimeters. There are 14 to 18 low, rounded and sharply separated ribs . The small areoles on it are dented. The brown or horn-colored thorns have a brownish tip. The mostly single central spine, sometimes two or three, is strong. The eight to ten inwardly curved radial spines have a length of 1 to 1.5 centimeters. The cephalium , made of soft brown bristles and white wool , is 2 to 3 centimeters high and has a diameter of 6 to 7 centimeters at its base.

The more or less purple flowers are not. The club-shaped fruits are purple in color and up to 2.5 centimeters long.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Melocactus broadwayi is widespread in the Lesser Antilles and Tobago .

It was first described as Cactus broadwayi in 1922 by Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose . Alwin Berger placed the species in the genus Melocactus in 1926 .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Near Threatened (NT) ", d. H. listed as low risk.
