Melody instrument

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A melody instrument is a musical instrument that is mainly used for playing melodies . The assignment of an instrument to the melody instruments depends primarily on whether it is only suitable for playing single notes according to its construction and common playing technique or also for playing harmonies ( chords , such as the guitar ), whichever is the case is a harmony instrument .

Typical melody instruments are almost all wind instruments in the middle to high register ( trumpet , flute , oboe , clarinet, etc. except harmonica ), violin , viola and violoncello , the latter being used as a figured bass instrument especially in the Baroque era . But you can also use a typical harmony instrument, e.g. B. piano or guitar, use as a melody instrument.

Melody instruments are in the middle frequency range , i.e. i.e., they sound normal to high.

Although, strictly speaking, the deeper-sounding instruments such as double bass , bassoon , tuba etc. are also melody instruments, since the common way of playing mostly consists of creating tone progressions (i.e. melodies), they are more likely to be referred to as bass instruments .
