The Melsunger FV 08 is a sports club founded in 1908 in Melsungen in northern Hesse . In the sports scene in the city, which is dominated by the handball club MT Melsungen , the MFV tends to eke out a shadowy existence and only appeared nationally once when it made it into the second main round in the 1978/79 DFB Cup . In league operations, the first team has played mostly at the second-highest level in Hesse since the mid-1960s, to which they last returned when they were promoted to the Hesse Association in 2019. The reserve team, also known as "Zwitte", has been playing in the Schwalm-Eder regional league since its promotion in 2013. In addition to football, table tennis is also played in the club .

history

In 1908 two football clubs were founded in Melsungen, FC Viktoria (on June 1st) and FV Arminia . Both merged the following year to form today's Melsung football club 08 . After the First World War, on August 1, 1920, the association made its home on the Friendship Island on the Fulda, which had previously been used as a goat pasture . A lively club life developed here, in addition to soccer, athletics were also practiced at this time, but the team did not appear nationwide before the Second World War.

After the war, the MFV had to compete with the other local clubs under the name Sportvereinigung Melsungen , which was dissolved again in 1949 into the clubs involved in it. At the beginning of the 1950s, the MFV 08 team, led by Erich Haake from Chemnitz, experienced its first brief heyday. They played in the 2nd amateur league Hessen, at that time the fourth highest division, and won the district cup in 1951. As early as 1953, however, there was a crash that led to the B-Class and, in the period that followed, very fluctuating performance. In 1959, the district cup was won again, but the club's supporters had to wait until 1964 before they returned to the 2nd amateur league. In the following year, the MFV initially missed the qualification for the newly established group league , but prevailed in an exciting championship race against Eintracht Großerritt in 1965/66 and rose again to league four.

For 14 years, from 1966 to 1980, the Melsunger FV held uninterruptedly in the second highest Hessian league, the group league north and from 1978 the state league north. Outstanding were the seasons 1972/73 and 1973/74, when Walter Obijou's team played for promotion to the Hessenliga and in 1974 finished in fourth place with only three points behind relay champion BC Sport Kassel - the best placement in the club's history up to that point . FV Melsungen attracted attention nationally in 1978 in the cup. After eliminating Hessen Kassel and FSV Bergshausen at the Hessian level , they qualified for the main round of the DFB Cup for the first time . In the first round of the 1978/79 competition , the Saarland representative SV Bliesen prevailed 3-2, but then had to travel to the second division side SpVgg Bayreuth , where MFV had no chance with 0: 6.

Participation in the DFB Cup was also the last sporting highlight in Melsung football for a long time, because as early as 1980 they unexpectedly dropped out of the regional league and now lived as an “elevator team” between the regional league and the regional league. When the blue-whites returned to the state league level in 1997/98, at the end of the second season after promotion, in 1998/99, for the first time in 25 years, promotion to the Hessen league was within reach, but at the end of the round this goal was included 3rd place and 10 points behind master KSV Baunatal missed. In the meantime, the FV 08 celebrated a one-year guest appearance in the league now known as the "Association League" in the anniversary year 2008, where they could hold out until relegation in 2017. Since 2019, the Melsunger FV 08 has belonged again to the Association League Hessen and, with a total of more than 30 years of membership, is the "longest-serving" club in the second highest Hessian amateur class.

Table tennis department

In addition to football, table tennis is also played at Melsunger FV. The department emerged from TTV Grün Weiß Melsungen , which was founded in 1946 and joined MFV 08 in 1958.
