The membrane cofactor protein (synonymous CD46 ) is a surface protein .

properties

CD46 is produced by all cell types except erythrocytes . It is a cofactor for complement factor I in the complement system . CD46 is involved in the development of T cells into T reg1 . It is glycosylated and phosphorylated . CD46 is the cellular receptor for adenoviruses of subgroup B2 and Ad3, for measles virus and human herpes virus 6 . Presumably it is also a receptor for the cell entry of Neisseria and Streptococcus pyogenes .
