Menata Njie

Menata Njie is a Gambian politician.

Life

Menata Njie married the politician and member of the Gambian parliament Foday Makalo (approx. 1947-2014). Her husband, who initially belonged to the opposition party NCP and later to the ruling APRC party, left the country in 1999 and went into hiding after he was allegedly the target of an attack by the regime of Yahya Jammeh . According to official information, he is said to have defrauded the APRC of 100,000 dalasi . When he escaped, he left his wife and children behind.

Njie is a member of the APRC and was one of the first women to run for election when she ran for the Gambia parliamentary elections in 1997 . With 25.14% of the votes cast, it lost the constituency of Kiang West significantly against Omar Kebba Mass ( UDP , 64.71%).

Around 2000 she was active for the APRC in Kiang West.

On December 5, 2013, she won a by-election in the Kiang West constituency with a clear lead over Pa Touray Bajinka ( NRP ) and thus advanced to the Gambian parliament. The election became necessary after the arrest of MP Yahya Dibba . From 2014 she was a member of the Joint Parliamentary Assembly of the EU and the countries of Africa, the Caribbean and the Pacific .

In 2016 she received the July 22nd Revolution Award from the Gambian President Yahya Jammeh .

In the parliamentary elections in 2017 , they did not occur again.
