history

Little is known about the founder of the beylik, Mengücek Gazi. He was probably one of the generals sent by the Seljuk ruler Alp Arslan to secure the Anatolian territorial gains after the Battle of Manzikert. Around 1080 he settled in the region, his headquarters was Kemah.

The Beylik was later split into two lines after the death of his son Emir İshaks in 1142, the capitals of which were Erzincan and Divriği. The line in Erzincan was subjugated by the Rum Seljuks under Kai Kobad I in 1228 , while the line in Divriği was subjugated by the Ilkhan in 1277 . During the long reign of Fahrettin Behramschah, Erzincan became a cultural center. Well-known poets such as Nezāmi , Chaqani and Abd al-Latif al-Baghdadi worked in Erzincan .

Divriği Mosque

The Mengücek are primarily honored for their monuments in Divriği. The Divriği Mosque was built by Ahmetschah in 1228. The adjoining hospital ( Darüşşifa ) was built in the same year by Turan Melek Sultan, daughter of the ruler of Erzincan Fahreddin Behramschah. Both buildings have been included on the UNESCO World Heritage List .
