Şebinkarahisar is a small town in the Turkish province of Giresun and at the same time the administrative center of the district of the same name . The city is located approx. 67 km (116 km by road) south of the provincial capital Giresun .
City history
Today's Şebinkarahisar was founded for veterans of the Roman army and was initially called Colonia , after which the topic of Koloneia was named in Byzantine times . The first buildings to erect the castle towering over the place date back to the 2nd century BC. The economy of Şebinkarahisar was based on the mining and trading of alums .
Numerous Armenians lived in the city until the First World War and their expulsion in the course of the Armenian genocide . It was here that Şebinkarahisar resisted in 1915 .
district
The district in the southwest of the province is the largest of these. It borders on Dereli County to the north, Alucra County to the east and Çamoluk County to the south-east . The Akıncılar , Suşehri and Koyulhisar districts of the Sivas province form the border in the south and west . Its population density of 15.6 inhabitants per km² is the second lowest in the province.
In addition to the district town (with a good half of the district's population) there are 62 villages (most per district) with an average of 174 inhabitants. Uğurca is the largest village with 421 inhabitants.
Attractions
In addition to the castle, the Licesi Church, built as a Greek Orthodox complex, and the Behremşah mosque, built in the 12th century, are worth mentioning. In the nearby village of Kayadibi there is the Meryem Ana Manastırı monastery (Greek: Μοναστήρι της Παναγίας Σταυροπηγιανής, Panagia Stavropigiani monastery), which dates from Byzantine times and is located on a rock .
