The district of Yağlıdere, located in the Pontic Mountains , extends in the hinterland of the Black Sea coast along the course of the Yağlıdere Çayı. The district is an internal district without borders to other provinces. It borders on Espiye County in the northeast, Güce County in the southeast, Alucra County in the south, and Keşap and Dereli County in the west. The last population information before the change of area comes from the 1985 census and showed 28,912 inhabitants for it, including 3,133 for the Bucak main town ( Bucak Merkezi ) Yağlıdere.
At the end of 2018, the district consisted of the district town and 22 villages ( Köy ) with an average of 364 inhabitants per village (total population of all villages: 8,008 inhabitants). The village of Sınırköy is the largest with 1,070 inhabitants.
