The menhir of Rothenburg (also called Femegericht or Fehmgericht ) is a menhir near Rothenburg , a district of Wettin-Löbejün in the Saalekreis in Saxony-Anhalt . In the soil monument list of experts it is listed as a medieval peasant stone.

Location and description

The stone is located northwest of Rothenburg at the southwest end of the lock island. Access is not possible directly from Rothenburg, but only via a bridge that connects the island with Nelbe on the opposite bank of the Saale . However, he was only brought here secondarily. Its original location was at the intersection of the former streets between Hettstedt and Rothenburg as well as Nelbe and Zickeritz .

The menhir is made of red sandstone . Its height is 200 cm, the width 180 cm and the depth 30 cm. It has the shape of an irregular plate and tapers at one end. The stone is no longer upright, but is set into a brick niche where it rests on several stones.

Finds from the environment of the block derived from the cord ceramic culture , the solid bronze time , the Slavic early medieval and from the Middle Ages .

According to a legend , the last crusaders were beheaded on this stone .
