It stands directly on the former salt road between Grimma and Meißen , which could still be seen as a dirt road in the 1950s, but has now completely disappeared. In the Middle Ages , the menhir served as a place of justice , as the name Rugestein indicates.

The menhir consists of lignite quartzite . It is plate-shaped, has a rectangular cross-section and a wedge-shaped tip. It has a height of 180 cm, a width of 60 cm and a depth of 35 cm.

The menhir in regional sagas

There are numerous legends about the stone : it is said to stand on the grave of a great man from prehistoric times or to indicate the place where a peasant was struck by lightning. In the Thirty Years' War a treasure to have been buried here, should also have been searching for the later vain. Furthermore, two children are said to have tickled each other here. There is also said to have been a song from Rugestein, which was never written down and has since been forgotten.
