Mentana cross

The Mentana Cross was a decorated at the 1867 decorations in the Papal States .

history

The founder was Pope Pius IX. with the Breve Ex quo infensssimi hostes on November 12th, 1867. People were honored who had excelled in the defense of the Holy See in the battle of Mentana on November 3rd, 1867 when Italian revolutionaries under Giuseppe Garibaldi tried to invade Rome and to conquer the papal state.

Order decoration

The order decoration was a cross with the applied distributed text on each cross arm “Papa Pius IX. 1867 ". In the middle, under the tiara, was the binding and loosening key , surrounded by the motto “Fidei et virtuti”, in English “Faith and virtue”.

On the back the fallen cross of the apostle Peter was depicted. Another motto could be read over two branches of laurel: “Hinc victoria”.

Ribbon and way of wearing

The ribbon was a white ribbon with two sky-blue stripes. The way of carrying was determined on the left side of the chest.
