The Mercedario is located in the Andes in Argentina and is the eighth highest mountain in the Andes at 6,720 meters.
The mountain lies in the border area with Chile. There are several gendarmerie checkpoints on the Argentine side. There is mining, copper mining .
Access is often from Barreal. After about 35 km you reach the main checkpoint Las Juntas, the confluence of two bodies of water. Access is via a guarded bridge. The mining company demands a permit. The mine itself is 121 km from Las Juntas.
