The Mercer Bay is a small bay in the south west of Cumberland West Bay on the north coast of South Georgia . It is limited at the head end by the Geikie glacier .
The bay can be found for the first time on a sketch by Samuel August Duse (1873-1933), cartographer for the Swedish Antarctic Expedition (1901-1903) under the direction of Otto Nordenskjöld . It is contained in the named form in the maps of the British Discovery Investigations produced between 1926 and 1930 . The namesake is believed to be Lieutenant Commander GM Mercer of the Royal Navy , a participant in the Discovery Investigations.
