Merismopedia is a genus from the tribe of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae).

description

Merismopedia forms transparent, plate-shaped flattened jellies in which up to several thousand cells are regularly arranged. The cells reach a diameter of 0.5 to 10 µm, have a round to elliptical cell shape and, like all bacterial cells, have no nuclei and no plastids . If the cells are elongated, they are arranged parallel to the gelatinous plane. The color of the cells goes from blue to blue-green to pink-red.

Reproduction

The asexual multiplication takes place by division of the cells within the colony ; the table shape of the colony stems from the fact that successive divisions always take place in one plane, namely at right angles to the previous division. Colonies can break up into partial colonies.

Sexual reproduction is absent in all cyanobacteria.

distribution

Merismopedia lives in plankton and benthos in oligo- to eutrophic , mostly stagnant waters.
