João Batista Casemiro Marques (born March 4, 1975 in Santana de Cataguases ) also known as Mertol Karatay in Turkey , is a former Brazilian football player who also has Turkish nationality .

Career

João Batista played his first professional season in Turkey with Gaziantepspor . In his debut season, he made 19 appearances for the first division and scored three goals. Batista returned to Brazil after one season and played for União São João for three years . The midfielder signed another time with Gaziantepspor and played for the red and black until January 2002 . In January 2002, João Batista moved to Galatasaray Istanbul , where he became Turkish football champion for the first time at the end of the season. For Galatasaray he came to 49 league games and scored two goals.

In the summer of 2004, the Brazilian left Turkey and moved to Shakhtar Donetsk in Ukraine . After just one season he left Shakhtar, during which time Batista only played in the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Cup . Engagements with Konyaspor and Kasımpaşa Istanbul followed . After the 2008/09 season, João Batista Casemiro Marques ended his active career.
