Location of Merum in the municipality of Roermond |
Merum ( Limburgish Maerem ) is a characteristic Limburg village that is now part of Roermond . In the past it belonged to the municipality of Herten , which also became part of Roermond in the nineties, which significantly lost self-determination.
Merum has two cafés, the SHH football club, a brass band and a shooting club. It has two carnival clubs , De Plekkers and De Beerkeuning Maerum . The Herten carnival parade also passes through Merum. For nature lovers, Merum is known for its Isabellengrund nature reserve, which is located on the edge of the village.
history
In pre-Christian times there was a sanctuary of the Thor in the east of Merum, which the Donderberg reminds of.
A large residential area (Oolderveste) with 875 apartments was built between Merum, Herten and Ool by 2010. This led to protests in Merum and Herten because a large part of the land with a view of the Maas lakes was lost and because the citizens feared for their peace and quiet.
reachability
The access to Merum is on the A73 towards Venlo , Nijmegen and Maastricht . Bus number 19 runs every half hour in the direction of Roermond station and stops at three stops in Merum.
