Knotted ice plant ( Mesembryanthemum nodiflorum )

The knotty ice plant is an annual succulent plant that reaches heights of 10 to 20 centimeters. Its growth is creeping to ascending with rich ramifications. The whole plant is often reddish in color during the dry season. The fleshy leaves are rolled and covered with small papillae . The leaves are arranged opposite each other, with the upper ones arranged alternately.

The flowers reach a diameter of up to 1.5 cm. The whitish to yellowish petals are shorter than the sepals .

The flowering period extends from March to August.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 18, 20, 32 or 36.

distribution

The distribution area includes the Mediterranean , the Canary Islands , Azores , Madeira and southern Africa. Salt marshes, fallow land and ruderal locations near the coast are preferred as locations . It is originally found in Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, Greece, Macaronesia, the Arabian Peninsula, West Asia, Namibia and South Africa. It is a neophyte in North America, Argentina, Chile and Australia .
