The Graz City Hall in Graz-Jakomini is the largest event hall in Graz . It was built between April 2000 and the beginning of 2002.

Building

The Graz City Hall, which is operated by Messe Congress Betriebsgmbh , stands on the site of the former Hall 1 of the Graz Exhibition Center. The architecture competition for the town hall was held between 1998 and 1999. The architect Klaus Kada was awarded the contract in December 1999 . The hall, which can be expanded to a maximum of 14,000 m², consists of an upper and ground floor. The practically column-free hall only stands on four basic pillars, which are located in each corner of the hall. The canopy protrudes far beyond the entire forecourt.

The exhibition hall A next to the town hall

Immediately adjacent to the town hall is the subsequently built exhibition hall A by the architects Florian Riegler and Roger Riewe.

history

Before the hall was built, larger events were only held in the Graz-Liebenau ice rink or in the Schwarzl leisure center outside the city.

The first major event in the hall, a Kalachakra transmission, took place in 2002. The 14th  Dalai Lama was present in person. The hall was previously the location for numerous events such as Wetten, dass ..? or Musikantenstadl . On November 16, 2007 the music event The Dome took place for the first time with its 44th and later its 52nd edition in the Graz city hall.

Other events included the Night Of The Jumps , the Handball Euro 2010 , a performance by the Harlem Globetrotters , various important concerts ( Xavier Naidoo , Pink etc.).

Also traditionally, the Styrian Farmers' Association takes place every year at Mardi Gras, which is one of the largest ball events in Europe with 16,000 visitors in 2020, for example.
