The Torhaus exhibition center is a high-rise in Frankfurt am Main . It was built in 1984 and divides the exhibition grounds into an eastern and western part. The architect Oswald Mathias Ungers vividly depicted the goal of the gatehouse as the “gateway to Frankfurt”.
building
The building consists of three interconnected components: A building with a reddish stone facade grows out of a triangular concave low building. It has a square opening many stories high on the front and back. Through this opening, an inner, mirror-glazed component can be seen, which grows out of the outer and reaches about twice its height. Its 30 floors are spread over 117 meters.
In addition to the headquarters of the trade fair administration, the Torhaus is the central point of contact for exhibitors and visitors: Levels two and three accommodate all the necessary service facilities for contact persons for stand construction, catering and hostess services to the central trade fair and tourist information, including room reservations Supermarket and post office. Messe Frankfurt can also serve with a kindergarten (level one), and as the only German exhibition center it offers the opportunity for contemplative moments in the in-house prayer room (level four). The press center with all service facilities for journalists is also on level four. Since January 1999, level three of the gatehouse has provided direct access to the Frankfurt am Main Messe S-Bahn station .
In the immediate vicinity on the exhibition grounds is the Messe heating power station operated by Frankfurt Mainova AG , for which the gatehouse serves as a chimney. This is why the building is also known as “Frankfurt's most beautiful fireplace”.
