Meta von Cranz is a single-mast flat-bottomed ship and was ordered from Brand Werft in Oldenburg in 1982 and built in 1983 by Ted van Rijnsover in Holland. The ship is an elaborate replica of a Dutch gaff rig sailor (Vollenhovense bol) from around the turn of the century (19th / 20th century), which was built in the province of Overijssel .
In June 1983 the hull was towed across various canals in the Netherlands and the North Sea and across the Elbe to Cranz-Neuenfelde .
After a four-year expansion phase by the owner, the launch took place on May 2, 1987. In the same month Meta von Cranz received the restoration award from the Hamburg cultural authority for one of the most beautiful and elegant replicas of vintage cars.
In the past, the Vollenhovense bol were mainly used as a load carrier for the large ships (e.g. for peat or fish). Because of their flat bottom, these ships were particularly suitable for shallow waters and could be steered to the shore or the edge of the harbor. Because of the shallow draft, you could also drive into small Elbe meadows and into the mudflats.
In this way, the Meta von Cranz can run dry without any problems when the water recedes completely at low tide. The ship's home port is Uetersen . There are guided tours for interested visitors.
