Metaphysis

Metaphysis is a section of bone between the diaphysis (bone shaft) and the epiphysis . During growth it contains the epiphyseal plate responsible for bone growth . In adults, it refers to the not sharply demarcated section of the diaphysis near the epiphysis of long tubular bones , which is made up of spongy bone substance ( cancellous bone ).

Changes in the metaphyses

In the X-ray detectable changes of the metaphyseal:

• Achondroplasia
• Fibrous dysplasia
• Enchondromatosis
• Gaucher disease
• Hypochondroplasia
• Kniest dysplasia
• Metachondromatosis
• Metaphyseal dysplasia
• Metatropic dysplasia
• Multiple cartilaginous exostoses
• Pseudoachondroplasia
